Role guide
Fractional Head of Product
A fractional Head of Product is a part-time, senior product leader who owns a startup’s product strategy, roadmap, and discovery a few days a week instead of full-time. Companies hire one to set product direction, build the product process, and grow the product team — typically 10–20 hours a week, around $8,000–$20,000 per month — when they’ve outgrown individual product managers but aren’t ready for a full-time product executive.
How it compares
Head of Product vs CPO, fractional PM & consultant
| Role | Scope | Seniority / commitment | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional Head of Product | Owns product strategy, roadmap & discovery, and leads the PM team — part-time | Senior leader, embedded 10–20 hrs/week | $8–20k/mo | Startups past their first PMs that need product leadership, not another individual contributor |
| Fractional CPO | Owns product, design, and sometimes data at the executive/board level | C-suite, board-facing, part-time | $12–25k/mo | Scaled product orgs needing executive, board-level product leadership |
| Fractional PM | Executes on a product or feature area as an individual contributor | Hands-on IC, part-time | $5–12k/mo | You have direction and need execution on a specific product area |
| Product consultant | Advises on a specific product problem; doesn’t own the roadmap or team | Advisory, project-based | $200–400/hr | A one-off audit, workshop, or recommendation |
A Head of Product owns strategy and leads the team — a fractional PM executes as an IC, a CPO operates at the board/exec level, and a consultant only advises.

What it costs
What a fractional Head of Product costs
Most fractional Heads of Product work on a retainer of $8,000–$20,000 a month, or roughly $1,000–$2,000 a day, for 10–20 hours a week on engagements that run 6–18 months — a fraction of a full-time Head of Product (often $180,000–$250,000+ in base salary plus equity). Engagements are usually embedded (owning delivery and the team), sometimes advisory, and sometimes interim while you hire full-time.
By stage
Which product role you need, by stage
| Company stage | Right product role | Signals you’re here |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-PMF / founder-led | The founder owns product | Small team; the product vision lives with the founder; no dedicated PM |
| Early traction | A product manager (often fractional) | You have a roadmap to execute and direction is set — you need an IC, not a leader |
| Scaling product | A fractional Head of Product | Several PMs or a growing roadmap need an owner of strategy, process, and hiring |
| Mature / board-level | A CPO (fractional or full-time) | Product, design, and data need executive, board-facing leadership |
Most startups climb this ladder — a fractional Head of Product is the right fit once you’ve outgrown individual PMs but don’t yet need a full CPO.
